In close cooperation with strategic partners, the institute is dedicated to the entire processing chain of data and information: from acquisition, transmission and processing to reliable protection. As a leading institute for applied research and application-oriented innovation in information and communications technology it has built up specialized knowledge with research projects ranging from studies and tests to the development of prototypes. More

Partnership with the RWTH Aachen University

Located in Aachen we develop solutions in close cooperation with the RWTH Aachen University. The department chairs are involved in various functions in the Fraunhofer Center Digital Energy.

The Institute for High Voltage Equipment and Grids, Digitalization and Energy Economics IAEW consists of the chairs High Voltage TechnologyTransmission Grids and Energy Economics, as well as Active Energy Distribution Gridswhere more than 90 scientific staff members work on current research in the context of the energy transition. The three chairs are divided into a total of 9 research groups, which complement each other both internally and across the chairs in terms of content and methodology with regard to the research topics asset management, flexibility coordination and grid protection & stability. The Automation of Complex Power Systems Chair of the E.ON Research Center at RWTH Aachen University utilizes interdisciplinary approaches to research interactions between electrical and heat networks and their communication infrastructures. Competence in high-performance computing and real-time systems, enable the creation of tailored simulation environments for the analysis of the challenges of future electrical grids. More

The Chair of Communications and Distributed Systems (ComSYS) conducts research ranging from complex and massively distributed peer-to-peer systems, to traditional Internet-based communications systems, ubiquitous devices, embedded systems, and highly integrated microsystems and sensor nodes. More

The Chair of Information Systems and Databases conducts formal analysis, prototypical development, and practical testing of meta-information systems. These systems are used to document and coordinate the distributed design, integration, and development of database-driven applications in computer science. Research topics include engineering information systems, meta data in community information systems, mobile applications and services, database and meta-database technology, technology enhanced learning, and model management. More
